People in the eastern suburbs of Christchurch are being warned to keep away from any flooding caused by the overnight rain.

Medical Officer of Health Dr Alistair Humphrey says people should still treat water as if it is contaminated.

He says it was important to avoid surface pooling of water.

It's day 12 since the quake for people in the eastern suburbs, and they are still living in darkness with no water and limited access to toilets.

Local MP Lianne Dalziel says she's still terrified to sleep upstairs in her two story home especially after a big 4.8 aftershock last night.

The weather in Christchurch today has been another challenge for people without power, as temperatures plummet.

Today's forecast high is just 14 degrees. Temperatures will be lower for the next few days, but should climb again towards the end of the week.
