Plans to ease Christchurch traffic congestion

Plans to ease Christchurch traffic congestion

16 March 2011, 9:15pm

A plan to ease the traffic congestion in Christchurch will be put in place next week.

“We have identified the routes causing the most issues for drivers and are exploring ways to improve traffic flows,” Alan Beuzenberg. Christchurch City Council Unit Manager Transport and Greenspace said today.

Traffic problems have become more common since the February 22 earthquake.

The Civil Defence Emergency Operations Centre, which includes transport staff from the CCC, NZTA and business partners, are identifying approximately 10 strategic routes to ease congestion from next Wednesday 23 March. The routes will be publicly advertised next week.

Mr Beuzenberg asked road users to be patient over the next few days as power was progressively restored to traffic signals.

People who can use buses or cycle are encouraged to do so. Free transport on buses has been extended until March 27.
