Wanted: Silt shifters

A final call is being made for help to shovel the last of the liquefaction from Christchurch streets.

Civil Defence said free collections of silt would end this week and it needed people for a "final blitz'' to get rid of it.

The Director of Infrastructure for Civil Defence, Michael Aitken, said the volunteer service was for those with genuine need.

"The volunteers are here to help people such as the elderly, those with disabilities or people without personal networks or community support to help with silt removal," he said.

Aitken said after April 30 people could take their silt to the EcoDepot for disposal and keep the receipts for insurance claims.

Volunteers and those needing volunteer assistance should call (03) 941 8999 or email info@ccc.govt.nz.

Volunteers will not clear silt from unsafe, red-stickered or vacant premises, said Aitken.
