Weather forecasters may be predicting a cold Easter weekend, but surfers and hardy swimmers will be able to jump back in the sea at Taylors Mistake and Lyttelton Harbour beaches from today.

Christchurch residents were advised to stay out of the sea soon after the February 22 earthquake as raw sewage was discharged to ease pressure on the damaged sewerage system.

Canterbury medical officer of health Alistair Humphrey said the latest test results showed water quality at Taylors Mistake and Lyttelton Harbour beaches had improved enough to allow recreational use again.

Meanwhile, the water quality at other Christchurch beaches was still poor and could be that way until next summer, he said.
