A 5.3 magnitude quake aftershock which struck Christchurch this month will be classified as a new event for insurance purposes, the Earthquake Commission (EQC) announced today.

The April 16 aftershock caused power to be cut to about 20,000 homes and damage to some buildings.

Today's announcement means people who suffered damage as a result of the aftershock would need to lodge a new claim with EQC by July 18.
