Swimming by starlight
Pool-goers make the most of calm nights

Keen Christchurch swimmers are enjoying calm nights before winter sets in as evening swimming takes off at Burnside's Jellie Park.
Operations manager Stuart Jacques said the pool had extended its opening hours since reopening last week and the outdoor pool, which would normally close in March, had stayed open.
However, the indoor sport pool, indoor hydroslide, teaching pool and toddlers pool would remain closed because of earthquake damage.
"We've kept [the outdoor pool] open due to the lack of pool facilities in the city," Jacques said.
Swimmer Andrew Southen said he was pleased the Christchurch City Council was "doing an extra bit" to provide more recreational facilities for residents, but the colder weather made it a bit harder to use the outdoor pool. "I think everyone's enjoying the experience. It's a bit of an effort to get in and out, but once you're in there it's quite pleasant," he said.
Jellie Park is open from 5am to 10pm weekdays and 6am to 9pm weekends and public holidays.
