Power on in red zone

Orion is urging caution at it restores power to parts of the CBD red zone.

In a statement Orion said people entering the red zone should treat properties as 'live', particularly if exposed wires could be seen or if demolition or digging was to be carried out.

Questions should be directed to Orion's contact centre on 363 9898.

The power supply in the CBD (within the four avenues) would be problematic for some months as building demolition work continued, the statement said.

Orion frequently received instructions on short notice from Civil Defence to disconnect unsafe CBD buildings for demolition and this often meant turning the power off to nearby buildings or streets.

Residents with power needed to be aware that further power cuts in the wider CBD (within the four avenues) were likely.

Orion said it understood customers' frustrations but asked for patience.
