Memorial walk won’t take place – 11 March 2011, 7pm
Issued at: Friday 11 March 2011, 7pm
The Memorial Walk through parts of the CBD, as part of the Memorial Day Commemoration on Friday 18 March, will not take place as anticipated.
National Controller Steve Brazier says after taking into account a number of considerations it just wasn’t safe or practicable to proceed with the walk.
“First and foremost due to safety considerations it wasn’t possible to go ahead with a Memorial Walk. Public safety is paramount and we wouldn’t have been able to guarantee this,” he says.
“I understand there will be a number of disappointed people, but we have to balance satisfying the public interest with public safety.
“We even looked at putting on buses to drive the public around the affected areas, but this raised more safety issues which couldn’t be ignored.”
