Recommencement of Greater Christchurch Metro urban public transport services.

The information on this page and the Limited Services page override all other information on this website (including that linked from the left- hand column).Please note that the journey planner and real-time info is INCORRECT. Please do not use these online services.

Environment Canterbury will recommence limited services within Greater Christchurch from March 3 2011. Recommencement of services will serve two primary purposes:

1. Increase accessibility to suburban shopping malls, workplaces, friends, doctors, support services etc
2. Reduce the volume of private car use. Private car use has been significant since the 22 February 2011 earthquake and has led to considerable congestion on Christchurch roads.

Key Points

• all services, both bus and ferry will be free for 2 weeks from the commencement date of 3 March 2011.
• all bus services travelling to the city will terminate at either Bealey Ave (northern services) or Christchurch Hospital (western and southern services). The terminus in each location will have a campervan staffed by Environment Canterbury staff. These staff will provide information, issue, and reload cards as required. 
• a regular shuttle will connect these two city terminus points at a frequency of 15 minutes.
• all services will operate between 7:00 am and 7:00 pm daily 7 days a week until further notice. The last service each day will start its journey prior to 7:00 pm, but will travel on to complete its journey.

Services being operated:

The Diamond Harbour Ferry service is back to normal.

A limited service will operate on parts of the following routes. Please note that through routes (services that normally travel from one side of the city to the other via the central city) have been split in half. Details of the limited services are provided on the Limited Services page.

Services unable to be operated:

No service will be provided on the following routes or parts of routes at this stage. We will continue to review the roads in these areas with a view to resuming services when possible.

Terminus locations:

The Hospital (Parkside) terminus is located on Hagley Ave between St Asaph St and Riccarton Ave.
The Bealey Ave terminus is located at temporary stop locations on the south side of Bealey Ave between Durham St North and Montreal St.

Departure times for limited services:

All services will operate between 7 am and 7 pm daily.
No buses will begin before 7:00 am or after 6:55 pm.

Shuttle between Bealey Ave and Parkside terminus

Departs from each terminus every 15 minutes between 7am and 7pm (last departure 6:45pm)

Metrostar

To New Brighton/Cowles Stadium: services depart from Halswell at :00 and :30 minutes past the hour
To Halswell: services depart from Shortland St, near Cowles Stadium at :00 and :30 minutes past the hour
Route changes:
The Metrostar will travel direct from QEII Park to Northlands via Travis Rd and QEII Drive. It will then travel along Main North Rd as far as Heaton St, and then continue along its normal route. It will NOT travel via Bassett St, New Brighton Rd, The Palms, Shirley Rd, Warrington St, Barbadoes St, Edgeware Rd, Springfield Rd, St Albans St and Merivale Mall.

Special Extension
The Metrostar will travel on to Cowles Stadium from New Brighton, travelling along Pages Rd and terminating on Shortland St between Pages Rd and Lenton St.

Orbiter

Clockwise: services depart from Linwood Ave opposite Eastgate every 30 minutes at :00 and :30 past the hour
Anticlockwise: services depart from Mairehau High School every 30 minutes at :00 and :30 past the hour

Route changes:
The Orbiter will not travel between Mairehau High School and Eastgate Mall (Hills Rd, Shirley Rd, Cresswell Ave, Gayhurst Rd, Gloucester St, Woodham Rd, and Buckleys Rd will NOT be served. Aldwins Rd will not be served on anti-clockwise trips). The normal bus stops at Eastgate will NOT be used – services will begin and end on Linwood Ave opposite Eastgate (adjacent to Linwood Park).

3 Airport via Avonhead

To Avonhead/Airport: services depart from Hospital Parkside at :00 and :30 minutes past the hour
To city: services depart from the Airport at :21 and :51 minutes past the hour

5 Hornby

To Hornby: services depart from Hospital Parkside at :20 and :50 minutes past the hour
To city: services depart from Hornby at :20 and :50 minutes past the hour

7 Halswell

To Halswell: services depart from Hospital Parkside at :10 and :40 minutes past the hour
To city: services depart from Halswell at :10 and :40 minutes past the hour
Route changes:
Services will start and end outside Halswell Pool on Halswell Rd. Areas beyond Sparks Rd will NOT be served.

8 Belfast

To Belfast: services depart from Bealey Ave at :15 minutes past the hour
To city: services depart from Belfast at :45 minutes past the hour

8 Halswell via Hoon Hay

To the city: buses will begin at Alpine View Lane and travel via Prestons Rd, Burwood Rd, Mairehau Rd, Marshland Rd, Briggs Rd, Akaroa St, Hills Rd, Warrington St, Barbadoes St and Bealey Ave.
