Prince to attend memorial service

Personal note: WOW.  I already had every intention of being at this memorial service, along with probably most of Christchurch.  Maybe I'll even catch a glimpse of 'Diana's son' and future king of England.  Hey, I've shaken the hand of then-future-president Bill Clinton, and of the man who walked on the moon, Buzz Aldrin, so I s'pose anything's possible.

BREAKING NEWS: Prince William will attend next week's national memorial service to mark the devastating Christchurch earthquake.

Prime Minister John Key said William would be at the North Hagley Park service on March 18 on behalf of the Queen.

He would also visit Greymouth to speak to the families of the Pike River Mine disaster.

It appears he will be making the trip without fiancee Kate Middleton.

''This is a heart-warming gesture that will mean a lot to the thousands of people whose lives have been forever changed by these events,'' Key said.

''I would like to personally thank The Queen for thinking of New Zealand in its darkest hours and very much look forward to seeing Prince William again, even though it is in very sad circumstances.''

The Prince will arrive in New Zealand on March 17 and fly to Australia on March 19 to visit areas affected by Queensland's cyclone and flooding.
