A second magnitude four quake in two days has jolted parts of Christchurch this afternoon.
The 2.23pm shake was located 10km deep and slightly east of Southshore, according to GeoNet's preliminary assessment.
It was followed eight minutes later by a magnitude 2.9 quake that was 6km deep near the base of the Port Hills around the Heathcote River and was accompanied by a loud booming noise, some hill residents said.
GeoNet forecasts predict an average of two to three magnitude four to 4.9 quakes a week in Canterbury at present.
